How To Avoid Holiday Weight Gain

December 7, 2017

The holiday season is known as the most wonderful time of the year, when people across the world celebrate over good food and gifts with family and friends. Unfortunately, it's also the most common time of the year when most people gain weight. Dinners with family and friends are common and usually involve a large amount of treats and delights that can pack on pounds. When you want to avoid increasing your waistline, there are a few important steps to take to remain fit and trim.

Limit Alcoholic Drinks

Many people don't realize how many calories they consume while sipping on a Moscow Mule or a Cranberry Mimosa. Limiting the number of drinks that you order while out at dinner or when attending a Christmas party will not only allow you to avoid bad behavior but can make it easier to maintain your weight during the holiday season.Stick to one or two alcoholic beverages when you're going out, and sip on water when you're mingling. You'll also want to avoid hot chocolate or apple cider to avoid excess calories due to the high sugar content that is found in common holiday beverages.

Maintain a Healthy Sleeping Schedule

The quality of sleep that you receive each night has a direct influence on your weight. Studies show that those who are fatigued are prone to feeling more hungry throughout the day and can snack more than normal.Make it a point to sleep seven to eight hours each night, to ensure that you feel energized and make better decisions about your diet the next day. Allow yourself time to wind down each evening by disconnecting from tablets and laptops, which can lead to sleep apnea. Attempt to take a mid-afternoon nap and sleep in on the weekends to catch up on your sleep.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise

Exercising is one of the most effective ways to combat holiday weight gain due to overindulging. Make it a point to stay active by spending three to five days exercising each week, whether you head to the gym or workout at home.Consider switching up your workout routine, to ensure that you remain motivated and don't lose your focus. Try fun activities like playing tennis, riding a bike, and dancing. Finding a workout partner will also allow you to stay motivated and have someone that you're accountable to each week.

Eat Slowly

Many people get excited and eat too fast when they're at a buffet or when they snack on appetizers at a holiday party. Making yourself eat slowly will limit the number of calories that you consume each day. Pace yourself and enjoy all of the flavors to ensure that you avoid eating too fast as you dig in on holiday treats and dishes.

Choose Protein-Rich Foods

Eating more protein throughout the day will allow you to feel full for longer and will limit how much you snack. Opt for consuming lean meats, which include chicken, turkey, and fish. Eating more legumes, nuts, and vegetables will also allow you to stay energized and can help you to have more control over your appetite instead of filling up on sugar and carbohydrates.
